Caring for your quilt

Close up Gratitude Quilt

Handmade quilts will last for decades when properly cared for. The age, overall condition, composition (ie. nature of the textiles used in the construction) and construction will help determine how to take care of your quilt.

Read on for a few suggestions on how to extend the longevity of your quilt, for future generations to enjoy.

Storage

  • When not in use, ideally roll your quilt loosely and store it in a well ventilated cupboard.

  • If space is at a premium, fold it loosely with large sheets of tissue paper and refold every 8 weeks or so to prevent permanent creases.

Display

Just as with any other soft furnishings, it is best to keep your quilt away from direct sunlight to preserve the colours.

Cleaning & drying

  • The golden rule is to clean the quilt in the same manner as the textiles making it would have been. If you have used textiles which have been dry-cleaned, your quilt should be dry cleaned as well. My suggestion is to pre-wash all your fabrics before making your quilt top, setting the reference point for future cleaning.

  • Machine wash your quilt in cold temperature, with a mild detergent.

  • There are many different views on how to dry the quilt: some advocate a low temperature tumble dry, others flat dry only and a third group feels line drying is the best. My suggestion is for you to chose whichever strategy is practical, and check your quilt regularly during the drying process, adjusting as necessary.

  • A quilt should typically only be washed once every six months or so, but aired regularly.

I hope you have found these tips useful!
